Lane County History Museum presents: History Pubs at the WOW Hall

Join us in the WOW Hall’s basement beer garden for a special series of talks and lectures about history, heritage, and preservation in Lane County. Enjoy a beer, wine, cider, or soft drink while you gain insight into our region’s past, and how that past impacts our lives today. Thank you to Lane County History Museum for partnering with the WOW Hall to present this series. These 21+ events will take place every second Saturday afternoon from October through June, so mark your calendars now! To kick off this series, on October 10 local author Joe Blakely discusses a topic near and dear to the WOW Hall: the struggle to save landmarks and beneficial organizations. Please note – the beer garden of our historic facility is not yet fully accessible for people with disabilities, particularly those who have difficulty using stairs. The Museum will live stream each event and we will provide a link on this page so anyone can watch. About Joe Blakely Joe R. Blakely is the author of 20 books about Oregon. Mr. Blakely’s books have been reviewed in newspapers, magazines, and on radio, and television. Joe R. Blakely has made presentations on his books to clubs, associations, museums, and to many groups. His biography of Oswald West, Oregon’s 14th governor (1911–1915), is the only one published on this famous governor. He wrote the legislation that saved Oregon’s beaches. He helped initiate the building of the Columbia Gorge Highway. Women got the right to vote in 1912 and he closed down the lawless town of Copperfield Oregon using his petite secretary Fern Hobbs. Joe R. Blakely’s books have been used in high school and college classes. His most popular books are about building Oregon’s Coast highway, and his two biographies of Governor West and Oregon’s great conservationist William Lovell Finley. His book about the University of Oregon’s “Tall Firs” was the first one written about this famous team that won the very first NCAA basketball Championship in 1939. And the first book he wrote “The Bellfountain Giant Killers” is a heartwarming story of a tiny school winning a state high school basketball championship in 1937. What’s unique about Blakely’s novels is that after writing a history, he then follows that up with a story based on his research. Historical Fiction? Mr. Blakely also has three books on baseball, Two non-fiction and one fiction. His latest book is about Eugene’s Saturday Market. About the Lane County Historical Society and the Lane County History Museum Mission: To spark learning, reflection, and inspiration through diverse cultural programming that promotes historical understanding, equity, and empathy. Vision: To be a trusted and vibrant county resource where diverse community members all feel welcome to share their stories, listen to one another, and reflect on how our histories both set us apart and bring us together. Historical Society: This non-profit organization serves to encourage the preservation of Lane County history. It also operates the Lane County History Museum, which collects and preserves artifacts and library materials that help establish or illustrate the history of Lane County. The Society is governed by an elected board of directors and an annual February meeting celebrates Oregon’s achievement of statehood. The Society also publishes the Lane County Historian, a tri-annual periodical of local historical information. It also prints a quarterly newsletter, The Artifact, and other publications such as diaries, cemetery records, and local census records. Throughout the year the Society hosts general meetings featuring presentations of historical interest. It also participates in many projects such as historic preservation and the collection of oral histories. Museum: The core mission of the Lane County History Museum (LCHM) is to make our collection of historic resources related to the history of Lane County, Oregon available so that the public may better understand the place we live today. We pursue these aims through our museum exhibits, maintaining our artifacts and archival collections, resource digitization campaigns, public programs, and support of other local history programs and organizations. LCHM is operated under contract with the county to protect, preserve, and research an artifact collection of over 10,000 items. Our ever-changing exhibits tell engaging stories that connect our visitors to the past. Our exhibits feature hundreds of historic photographs and artifacts that create an immersive and tangible experience. We use our collections and archival resources to ensure our diverse visitorship will leave having learned something new and surprising about our local history.
